Call to Worship (based on 1 Peter 1)

Praise God! the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ,

whom we do not yet see, yet whom we love;

whom we have not yet met, yet whom we trust!

Because of the resurrection of Jesus Christ,

we have been given a brand-new life,

and a glorious future!

Let us come before him with thanksgiving and praise;

and celebrate what he has done for us!

Opening Prayer

Lord, we are all starting to feel cooped up and restless during this time. We are worried and afraid. As we come into worship in this still strange format, meet us. Give us strength. Build up our faith. Teach us your ways. May we be really present in this service. Amen.

Hymn- Christ the Lord is Risen Today

Christ the Lord is risen today, Alleluia!

Sons of men and angels say, Alleluia!

Raise your joys and triumphs high, Alleluia!

Sing ye heav’ns, and earth reply, Alleluia!

Lives again our glorious king, Alleluia!

Where, O death, is now thy sting? Alleluia!

Dying once He all doth save, Alleluia!

Where thy victory, O grave? Alleluia!

Love’s redeeming work is done, Alleluia!

Fought the fight, the battle won, Alleluia!

Death in vain forbids His rise, Alleluia!

Christ has opened paradise, Alleluia!

Sing ye to our God above, Alleluia!

Praise eternal as his love. Alleluia!

Praise him all ye heavenly hosts. Alleluia!

Father, Son and Holy Ghost. Alleluia!

The Apostles’ Creed

I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth.

I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, and born of the virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried; he descended into hell. The third day he rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From there he will come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints,

the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

Hymn- Because He Lives

1 God sent His son, they called Him Jesus

He came to love, heal and forgive

He lived and died to buy my pardon

An empty grave is there to prove my savior lives

Because He lives, I can face tomorrow

Because He lives, all fear is gone

Because I know He holds the future

And life is worth the living, just because He lives

2 How sweet to hold a newborn baby

And feel the pride and joy He gives

But greater still the calm assurance

This child can face uncertain day, because He lives

3 And then one day, I'll cross the river

I'll fight life's final war with pain

And then, as death gives way to victory

I'll see the lights of glory and I'll know He reigns

Scripture, Sermon, and Benediction

A Franciscan Blessing

May God bless you with discomfort at easy answers, half truths, and superficial relationships, so that you may live deep within your heart.

May God bless you with anger at injustice, oppression and exploitation of people, so that you may work for justice, freedom and peace.

May God bless you with tears to shed for those who suffer from pain, rejection, starvation, and war, so that you may reach out your hand to comfort them and turn their pain to joy.

And may God bless you with enough foolishness to believe that you can make a difference in this world, so that you can do what others claim cannot be done. Amen.

Follow up Question for Thinking and Discussion

  • What do you think Easter weekend was like for the disciples?
  • Where do you doubt like Thomas?
  • What from your past do you wish you could have a “do over”?
  • Where do you need to make peace with Jesus like Peter needed to?
  • Do you see Jesus as your personal savior and lord, or do you think of Jesus’ work as part of a grand story? How could you live it more personally?
